Good Beach Vacations in Southern California?

We are considering a trip down to southern California and wanted to get a recommendation on a good beach hotel in southern California (probably Orange County and not as far south as San Diego. Does anyone know of a good places to stay with the family? I'm looking for good beach access and perhaps a walkable town.

I would recommend The Balboa Bay Club & Resort in Newport Beach for a great place to stay. Another good place is La Casa del Camino in Laguna Beach.

There are also some really fun things to do in the area including:

1. Walk around Balboa island and enjoying bay views and seeing adorable beach cottages with blooming gardens
2. Get Balboa bars (frozen bananas) on balboa island
3. Ferry ride from Balboa Island to Pennisula/beach/ to visit the the merry-go-round and the ferris wheel
4. Enjoy Laguna Beach and explore beach coves and tidepools at low tide
5. Going to Montage or St Regis and order drinks over looking the ocean or go down to the ocean front area
