Holiday Carousel and Train Rides in the San Francisco Area

Step away from the holiday rush to experience some unforgettable Christmas rides on trains and carousels in the most magical settings the San Francisco Bay Area has to offer. Your kids will be talking about these experiences through 2010!

Tilden Park Carousel

The setting of Tilden park in the hills above Berkeley together with a carousel decorated for the holidays and a redwood “Christmas tree” makes this a magical holiday setting. Children will long remember a ride on the carousel in the peaceful evening darkness of the woods. The snack shop offers hot chocolate and cider. There is even a Christmas village complete with a gingerbread house. Santa is in attendance on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Nightly November 27rd - December 23rd, 5:30 - 8:30.

Roaring Camp Railroad Holiday Tree Walk
Roaring Camp’s Holiday Tree Walk presents a unique way to see holiday trees in their native environment. Passengers riding the steam train will delight in the tree-lined walk of festive holiday trees displayed atop Bear Mountain. Guests can sip hot cider and view beautifully adorned trees decorated by area businesses and organizations as they raise funds for their respective organizations. Cap off the evening with some story-telling for children in the General Store Annex. Don’t forget to bundle up as the train gets chilly.

Steam trains depart 11:00 am and 12:30 pm November 27, 28 & 29 and at 12:30 pm on December 5 & 6.

Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad

Each year Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos hosts the Festival of Lights turning the park into a fantastic holiday light display. You can drive through the park to see the lights from your car but in my opinion the real way to experience the holiday magic is from the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad. The railroad runs a special “Fantasy Train of Lights” Dec. 8-30 from Thurs-Sun, 6-9PM. $5.00 Per Ride. There is always a tremendous crowd of cars lined up to drive through the park for the light display so I recommend going early, parking the car, enjoying the park and carousel and then hopping on the train when it opens. If you go later, I recommend calling the railroad to get the “recommend route” so you avoid the line of cars waiting to drive through the park.

The “Fantasy Train of Lights” train runs Dec. 8-30 from Thurs-Sun, 6-9PM. $5.00 Per Ride.
